Cole listens intently and does not interrupt, though I can see the questions surfacing. There is no anger or pity in his eyes as he takes in my story, this part of my life I have kept hidden. I can see the hurt, and for that I feel some guilt and shame. Cole has been nothing but loyal to me, always putting his needs below my own. He may be a huge pain in my ass but he adores me, wants me safe and happy. I have been selfish and I don’t deserve him. I don’t deserve this dedication.

I lower my gaze as that shameful pang sets in. He smooths my hair down before gently kissing the top of my head and in that single moment, I feel every unspoken word from him. Just like that, I know he has forgiven me, that he is relieved to have been let in. To be permitted to help soothe away the torment eating at my mind and heart.

“Let’s get you to bed. You need to rest.” Strong hands lift me out of the tub and set me on the cold floor.

Looking up at him, I place my hand above his heart, steadying myself.I chance a glance back to the tub, where all the dirt, grime, and blood from the last few days of my life floats in the water. Cole pulls the drain, sending all the worst of my transgressions with it.

“Stay with me?” I plead.

“Always,” he responds so simply, without even a moment’s hesitation and kisses the end of my nose.

“I need you Cole.”

“I’m here, and I’m not going anywhere, Princess.”

“I mean, I need you, Cole. Please? Please help me forget, just for a little while.“ Placing my hands back on his chest, I pull back from him, and his gaze roams my body twice before looking into my eyes. I track the deep swallow he takes.

“Rune,” he almost whines, the strain of self control clear as his hazel eyes stare unabashedly into mine. “Are you sure you want this?”

“I am. Please. I need this,” I say with a pout.

I’m selfish. So incredibly selfish to use his feelings for me, his loyalty for me. A growl rumbles deep in his chest, and faster than I can even contemplate begging, I find myself locked between his strong body and the wall.

“I will never deny you,” he says gruffly, then bends down, his lips brushing mine as he claims me.

What a gentle claiming this is. His kiss is passionate and teasing. Gentle, as he explores. I nip at his bottom lip, not wanting gentle, wanting more. The graze of my teeth seems to snap the tether on his self control, and is his undoing. His hands wrap around my ass, lifting me into the air, my legs intertwining around his waist, locking me in place.

Our bodies mold together. Where I end, he starts, his body caging me against the wall. His calloused fingers explore my body, lightly stroking at my skin. His hand lazily trails up my side.
